Feeding future urban populations - Introducing the vertical farm

Vertical farms are a very promising and sustainable solution to the growing needs for healthy, local foods in (over)populated urban areas. What’s more, at Grodan, we believe vertical farms will play an indispensable role in our future global food production. So, what is it all about?

The vertical farm: in short
In a vertical farm, vegetables and herbs can be grown on multiple layers in a limited surface area, or in so-called towers. Vertical farms rely for a 100 percent on artificial light and are typically constructed in a traditional warehouse, converted industrial space (e.g., old mill buildings) or converted shipping containers.

Smaller crops with short growing cycles
Crops grown in a vertical farm are typically smaller crops with a relatively short growing cycle. Think about microgreens, herbs, lettuce and leafy greens. As everything in the farm is steerable, you can grow food in the safest and cleanest way possible. Steerable growing media perfectly fit this way of sustainable growing.
